Insecurity: Illiteracy, Poverty The Root Cause – NGF Chairman

Illiteracy and poverty have been identified as the root cause of insecurity and other criminal activities in Northern Nigeria.

Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum (NGF)-cum Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, made this known during the opening ceremony of a two-day meeting of Northern Governors and chairmen of Northern states Traditional Council in Kaduna state.

The meeting was aimed at discussing the challenges bedeviling the region and ways of addressing them.

According to Shettima, insurgency and other insecurity issues experienced in the region in recent times were as a result of poverty and illiteracy, stressing that, traditional rulers have a key role to play in ensuring that the menace comes to an end.

He further called on leaders at all levels to work hard towards the unity and development of the country.

In his remarks, the chairman of Northern Traditional Rulers and Sultan of Sokoto reiterated the commitment of the traditional institution in ensuring peace and stability in the country. He called on religious leaders to desist from using places of worship for hate speeches.

Earlier, the Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, while making his remarks enjoined other governors to join him in the search for lasting peace in Southern Kaduna.

Ten governors and five deputy governors were present at the meeting, which is expected to end today, Tuesday.
