PLATEAU STATE: Illegal Mining a thorn in our flesh – committee chairman

With the recent shutdown of The Solid Unit Nig Ltd at Kampany Zurak in Wase local government council of Plateau State, has been shut down by the Minister for Solid Mineral for alleged illegal mining.

Caretaker Committee chairman of Wase local government council, Dr. Ado Buba, has said that what they have removed for the last eight to nine years worth not less than N40 billion.

Speaking to newsmen in Wase local government council, Dr Buba lamented that “this has been a thorn in their flesh for several decades now, particularly the Kampany Zurak and part of Kadarko in Wase.”

The illegal miner, whose Company was shut down by the federal government some weeks ago and who is the Managing Director of the Solid Unit Nig Ltd is Alh. Abdullahi Adamu Usman, (alias “Dan China”).

He said, since the company has been there for about 20 years now, the only contribution made was the building of a block of classrooms, which is not as good as the ones on ground, and has not even been completed.

According to him, no plaster, no windows, no doors; part of the roof is being burnt off, no ceiling and no painting. That is the only contribution he made.

He explained that, Wase is endowed with rich mineral deposits, which are supposed to be the source of revenue to the local government council, state and the federal government.

The chairman further lamented that “it is a clear-cut of the economic sabotage; we have been crying for quite a long time, and we do not relent simply because we know it’s difficult; but to God be the glory.”

Dr Buba also informed that with the back off of the Mining Act of 2007, “a single individual that is empowered by law to actually monitor and regulate mining activities is only the Federal Government.

“But, they must do it with the collaboration of other tiers of government, which include the State and the local government council being the closest to the government.”

He said, the people should be carried along together with the ministry activities, “because even in their absence we can monitor for them,” adding that, “we cannot just rely on security agents; they are people that usually come when there is crises; and when there is no crises, they find it difficult to maintain it for us. So, I think there must be collaboration between the three tiers of government,” he stated.

The Caretaker Committee chairman explain further that, the Minister is the one that made the far-reaching declaration and one of those declarations is actually to go after this illegal miners; that have taken away mineral deposit in billions.

“In fact, the mineral deposits that have been hacked out of the tunnel and those on the surface combined value not less than N15 billion,” he said.

He expressed his happiness and commended the federal government for the far-reaching decision by declaring all those illegal miners wanted, particularly “Dan China.”

Investigation revealed that, twelve workers out of those arrested by the federal government for illegal mining in Wase have been released.

Conscience Triumph reports that some groups of youths are for “Dan China,” while others are not. The group for “Dan China” has accused the member representing Wase Constituency in House of Representatives, Hon Ahmed Idris Maje, for ‘convincing’ with the minister and the state government to arrest some of their youths for alleged illegal mining at Kampany Zurak.

The group said that the “Dan China” Company has created job opportunities for the teeming youths in the area, and has engaged many of them, and it has been in existence for at least two decades.

Those groups against “Dan China” accused him of using his money to take away their woman in the area.
